After 15 Years, Leimert Park’s Historic Vision Theatre Is Back

A nearly century-old South Los Angeles landmark is stepping into the spotlight again. Following a 15-year, nearly $40 million restoration, the Vision Theatre Performing Arts Center has officially reopened in the heart of Leimert Park Village.

Originally opened as a neighborhood movie palace in 1932, the Vision Theatre has long been part of Leimert Park’s cultural identity. Actress Marla Gibbs purchased the venue in 1990, transformed it into a live theater, and gave it the name the community still knows today. Now, the restored landmark is ready for its next act.

Inside the New Vision Theatre Performing Arts Center

The renovation goes far beyond a fresh marquee. The redesigned 729-seat theater now features new mezzanine and balcony seating, an expanded stage, an orchestra pit, dressing rooms, a green room, production offices, and upgraded audio, video, lighting, and broadcast technology.

At the same time, preservation remained central to the project. The theater’s Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival details have been restored, including its historic ceiling mural, lobby features, front portico, marquee, and iconic neon sign. A New Cultural Anchor for Leimert Park

The reopening arrives as Leimert Park continues to strengthen its reputation as the cultural heart of Black Los Angeles. The Vision Theatre is expected to host theater, concerts, dance, film screenings, educational programs, community gatherings, and work from artists throughout the African diaspora.

The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs has partnered with WACO Theater Center to operate and program the venue. WACO, founded by Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson, focuses on creating opportunities for artists of African descent and presenting stories connected to the African diaspora.

Soft-launch performances, community events, and membership programming are expected to lead into the theater’s first full season in February 2027, with approximately 15 to 20 productions and events planned. Read the latest reopening details from LAist.

A venue of this scale could bring thousands of new visitors into Leimert Park Village, creating more foot traffic for the neighborhood’s restaurants, coffee shops, galleries, bookstores, boutiques, and other independent businesses.
